This show took me by surprise! I’ve never been into the world of chess, most likely due to the fact that I don’t play the game. Unfortunately, because never in my life have I wanted to learn chess more than right now. What for some (me included) can look like a slow and boring game played in silence, turns into a highly intense experience in this Netflix miniseries. The drama that unfolds in The Queen’s Gambit will have you staring at the screen with excitement.
The Queen’s Gambit offers an amazing plot with deep character development
One of the greatest things about this Netflix miniseries is the rich character development, especially the character of Beth Harmon. We get to witness her from a child orphan to a young and extremely talented woman. From the first episode, she is introduced to the world of chess as she discovers the janitor at her orphanage playing in the basement. They become friends and form a lifelong bond. I don’t wish to give any spoilers away, therefore I won’t get into too many details. Throughout the show, we are introduced to her family, new friends, and competitors as she starts her rise to fame. The struggles Beth’s faces are not only on a chessboard but also in her mind.
Will there be a season 2?
The Queen’s Gambit was originally produced to be a limited series. But after the massive success of the first season, why not cash in on it? I mean, it was the biggest scripted limited series Netflix has had to date. Well, there are things that could go against all of our wishes for a new season. The first season is based on the 1983 novel The Queen’s Gambit by Walter Tevis. The end of season one is also the ending of the novel.
This means that if a season 2 were to be made, the plot would have to move away from the novel it’s based on. The show’s executive producer has stated that he loved the ending of season 1 and that the rest should be up to the audience’s imagination. However sweet that is, I’d still vote for a follow-up season personally. But at the same time, it really did end in a perfect way. For now, rumors about a season 2 is still up in the air. It will be exciting to see with time where they land.
Chess rising in popularity
During these times, games one can play inside have naturally increased, but the after effect of The Queen’s Gambit was something nobody expected. Sales have gone through the roof for chessboards and according to Chess.com they have gotten millions of new users ever since The Queen’s Gambit came out. Chess players and champions from around the world have all had to give their inputs on the miniseries, as interest has risen to the extremes. I’ve even been trying to learn chess myself. Unfortunately, I don’t seem to pick it up as quickly as Beth Harmon.
