Mumbai, September 23, 2011: On the eve of Daughter’s Day, Shaadi.com – The world’s largest matrimonial website, conducted a survey to understand the acceptance of a girl child in modern India. The survey which received responses from over 6000 Shaadi.com members across India highlights the preference for a girl child and the maturity of the next-generation Indian parents. When asked if they would prefer a girl or a boy child, over 50% of stated that ‘Babies are God’s gifts and that both genders should be treated equally.’ This etches the reality that today girls are given equal importance and are believed to be an asset rather than a liability.

The results showed that the perception of the traditional laden Indian society is evolving and the previously low valued female child is now a key element providing nurture and stability. Nearly 37% respondents preferred a girl child as they felt that girls are more sincere and loving. Only 9% wanted a male child since society perceives them as an assurance to security and a hope of carrying the ‘family name’ ahead. However, it is heartening to see that, majority of respondents would be happy with either gender since they considered these infants to be gifts from God with equally endowed skills and abilities.

Earlier girls were thought to be a burden on the family mainly because of the hefty investment – commonly known as dowry – parents needed to shower the boy’s family with at the time of marriage.. With the development of science and gender prediction technology, people found way to curb the birth of the female child. When asked if the respondents accepted the recent government ban on sex-revelation sonographical techniques, an outstanding 84% respondents said that they are approve of the ban. Only 16% respondents, thought otherwise.

The survey also revealed the today boys and girls are considered equal in all aspects with an overwhelming 50% respondents agreeing with the statement. With respect to smartness and sincerity, 22% felt that the fairer-sex is smarter than boys and 24% said that girls are more sincere than boys.

Expressing his views on the survey results, Mr. Gourav Rakshit, Business Head, Shaadi.com said, “Female infanticide and gender-selection have haunted India in the past. The Daughter’s day poll is part of the constant research that Shaadi.com conducts in its attempt to gauge the preferences of its members. The survey illustrates that today women play an equal role in society and a female child is blessing rather than a burden. It is moving to witness that people are tearing apart the fabric of rigid traditions and adding pleasant colors to the lives of a girl child.”

Chennai, 16th June, 2011: Today’s generation of youngsters who are independently choosing their life partner are slowly leaning towards their parents’ for feedback on the prospective groom or bride says a survey by Jeevansathi.com India’s fastest growing matrimonial portal. The survey reveals that prospective brides and grooms despite being the final decision makers look up to their parents for feedback on their choice of a life partner. The feedback played an important role in shaping the choice.

The sample population of 25000 respondents was independent young people who were looking for a life partner on their own but still felt the need to take parental feedback on the choice of their partner.

The survey reveals that the father who was traditionally seen as decision maker (whereas the mother was an influencer) is moving towards a role where the children can look to him for a feedback and be their confidante in choosing a life partner. Fathers are slowly closing in on this space with almost 45 per cent of the 25000 respondents said that the feedback from the father plays a role in influencing their decision

The Jeevansathi.com survey results said Mothers continue to be the subtle influencers with 55 per cent of the sample population stating that the feedback from the mother is a key factor before they finally decide on their partner.

Commenting on the findings of the survey Rohit Manghnani, Business Head, Jeevansathi.com said,”The new generation of children of marriageable age are counting to lean towards their parents for opinion. Traditionally it was the mother who played the influencing factor and the father the decision maker. Today the roles are changing – the survey shows that young men or women take the decision and parents are looked at for feedback which is a key influencing factor. The father has also started playing the role of the influencer rather than the decision maker.”

When it comes to choosing a life partner parents especially mothers feedback plays an influential role in the decision making process of their children and choosing their marriage partner.

The survey received an overwhelming response and saw the participation of 25000 Jeevansathi.com members. The survey was conducted ahead of the father’s day to gauge influencing and decision making patterns followed even among educated independent young people who were choosing their life partner.

Chennai, 3rd May, 2010: A study by Jeevansathi.com shows that 53% of divorcee men approach single women for re-marriage, while divorcee women do not have any significant preference for either single or divorcee men for re-marriage. This trend is not only significant among self posted profiles of divorcee men but also among profiles posted by parents of divorcee men, where 62% of them prefer their son to re-marry single women.

Commenting on the findings of the study Rohit Manghnani, Business Head, Jeevansathi.com said, “Online matrimony sites such as Jeevansathi.com provide divorced individuals an opportunity to find partners of choice with ease in an environment which caters to the sensitivity of the situation. It has been witnessed that these days single women are open to proposals from both single and divorced men. This clearly proves that women are now more open minded and therefore we see that reflection in the proposals from Divorced men.”

A similar trend has been reflected if we further slice the data by community, where across communities divorcee men prefer single women. As indicated by the below table, 76% Haryanvi Divorcee men and 64% of Oriya divorcee men prefer single women for matrimony. Both these communities have shown high affinity towards single women. On the other hand divorcee men from Himachali communities have shown equal preference towards never married and divorced women.

Chennai, 5th April 2011: Today BharatMatrimony announces the result of their online survey on Changing Trends in Marriages which was conducted on the fall of Matrimony Day 14th April. The survey reflects the perception of the people and their changing outlook towards marriages.

More than 55 per cent of the nearly 5200 people who took part in the survey voted companionship as the most important ingredient for a successful marriage. Only 19 per cent believed that economic stability was more important for a successful marriage; physical intimacy came third with 10.3 per cent. Interestingly, only 5 per cent felt that it was necessary to have children for a marriage to be successful. About 10 per cent said that sharing the same religious beliefs were essential for marital success.

About 72 per cent of the respondents felt that companionship was more important than personal freedom.

Murugavel Janakiraman, CEO and Founder, BharatMatrimony, says “Companionship emerged as the most crucial element for success in a marriage in the survey organized in connection with Matrimony Day falling on April 14. The majority of the people who took part in our survey believed that marriage was a divine union that should not be broken. The survey indicates that Indians attach a lot of sacredness to their marriages while not being averse to shedding views that they consider outdated. The survey has captured the shifts in thinking and trends with respect to matrimony on a large scale.”

A whopping 64 per cent felt that marriage was a divine union that cannot be broken, about 24 per cent did not think so; 12 per cent were not so sure. Over 65 per cent felt that the meaning of marriage has changed over the years; 24 per cent did not agree.

Nearly 38 per cent of the respondents said that they would sacrifice their freedom for the sake of their marriage. But 28 per cent were not so sure. The remaining was clear that they would not give up their freedom to save their marriage. Reflecting a change in outlook, 34.5 per cent said that premarital sex was no longer a moral crime though 41.4 still frowned on it while 24 per cent did not commit to any views here. 34.5 per cent did not consider live-in relationships taboo; only 27 per cent disagreed; 38 per cent did not say ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

Another surprising response was on pre-nuptial agreements. 48 per cent felt that it was necessary to safeguard individual freedom while 27.6 per cent disagreed.

Are married people happier than unmarried people? 41.4 per cent said yes while 34.5 replied in the negative; 24 per cent were not so sure. The most important reason for people to get into marriage was companionship. In fact an impressive 65.5 per cent voted for companionship as the no 1 reason for them to get into marriage. Other reasons like children, security, societal pressure and religious beliefs scored fairly low.

A study by Jeevansathi.com, India’s fastest growing matrimonial site shows that professionals in IT- software and Medical have shown preference for partners in the same profession. However, professionals in Banking, Entrepreneurship, HR and Govt Services do not display any inclination towards marriage within the same profession. This data has been derived by analyzing the data of contacts made by men to women on profession based parameters.

Commenting on the research Rohit Manghnani, Business Head, Jeevansathi.com said “Doctors very often seek partners from the same profession as they feel other medicos will understand the odd hour pressures that they face. More importantly that also gives them a chance to set up their own clinic/nursing home at some stage. In case of software professionals they very often need to travel for extended periods out of country. By having a partner in the same field they can do the international travel more easily.”

The chart details out the matrimonial preference patterns of professionals within the same profession. This clearly shows that 21% of IT- Software professionals and 20% of Doctors have initiated marriage contacts within their own profession. On the other hand Entrepreneurs, Government servants have shown no special preference for marriage within their own profession.
